WIlliam T. Turner Jr.
North Portland Bible College has announced the opening of the Center for Urban Pastoral Leadership, a new initiative focused on providing a variety of practical resources for urban pastors.  The new Center, according to William T. Turner, Jr. who serves as Director, is intended to be a place where pastors can benefit from interaction with each other and find resources that serve their distinctive needs.

The Center for Urban Pastoral Leadership (CUPL) will make available events and tools to help pastors stay abreast of critical issues and aware of how others are effectively dealing with them.  Among the resources offered will be periodic seminars led by experienced urban ministry specialists, workshops built around personal ministry needs, and opportunities for interaction with other pastors who are grappling with the changing needs in the city.  “We hope to see the Center providing opportunities for seasoned pastors, as mentors, to come alongside less experienced pastors to provide the wisdom they’ve gained over the years,” said Turner.  The Center’s activities were inaugurated in April with the beginning of a series of seminars on Critical Issues in Pastoral Leadership

The Center also hopes to be a catalyst for identifying issues of critical concern to pastors, and will look to an advisory team of seasoned urban pastors for guidance in this effort.  “This concept grew out of extensive conversations with pastors in the city’s core,” said Dr. James E. Sweeney, President of North Portland Bible College.  “We believe that this new resource center can serve a distinctive purpose in the city, with its commitment to strengthening the hands of pastors and their churches.  Urban pastors face unbelievable challenges on a daily basis, and we want to stand with them and provide resources to assist them.”

Turner has been senior pastor at Trinity Full Gospel Pentecostal Church in Portland since 2002.  Prior to that he served in various pastoral positions at Emmanuel Temple Full Gospel Church, Portland, Shekinah Glory Church, Tacoma, Wash., and Evangel Temple Church in Redmond, Wash.

He is a board member with the Albina Ministerial Alliance, and expects to complete an M.Div. degree in pastoral studies at Multnomah Biblical Seminary this December.

Serving on the Center’s Pastoral Advisory Council are Dr. T. Allen Bethel, senior pastor of Maranatha Church in Portland; Dr. LeRoy Haynes, Jr., senior pastor of Allen Temple CME Church in Portland; George Merriweather, senior pastor of Northeast Community Fellowship in Portland; Clifford Chappell, senior pastor of St. Johns All Nations Church of God in Christ in Portland; Dr. Roger Trautmann, professor at Multnomah University; and Bishop A. A. Wells of Full Gospel Ministries in Vancouver, Wash.
